The Church was built on high ground overlooking the main road from New Norfolk to Hamilton in an area known as Macquarie Plains. The Church was known as the Woolpack Church because of its proximity to the Woolpack Inn the local public house which dated back to the 1820s. The Parsonage was built some 50 years after the Church and was located on the corner of the main road from New Norfolk to Hamilton and the road to the Church. Over the following years the area became known as Gretna and the Parsonage became known as "The Rectory". Partly sourced, The Mercury 1896.
