The building, in the heart of the village, dates back to the first part of the 18th Century when the War of the Spanish Succession was being waged between Spain and the Grand Alliance of England, Holland, Prussia and Austria. The building was subsequently variously used as a hospital, bakery and mill during the economic boost to the area following the end of the war. The beginning of the 19th Century saw a new war, the Spanish War of Independence overlapping with the Peninsular War, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain. The French occupied Granada and used the Casa de las Tropas to house troops, and rich rumours still swirl today surrounding the officers who were stationed in the barracks in Moclin. Following the end of the War of Independence, life for the building as a barracks continued until around 1844, after which time the property was divided to provide homes for wealthy locals. The current owners family bought the property in 1960 and it was used as a working dairy farm. 300 years of rich history, and stories contained within the thick stone walls. The property was eventually sensitively restored and 6 large, self-contained apartments were created maintaining the sense of the past and reminders of the heritage of the building. Today, the property and the fully licensed apartments have been very well maintained and in addition to the independent space afforded to each apartment, there are communal areas both inside and out. This is, therefore, an opportunity to acquire an established, income-generating tourism business in a village that will be getting a lot of press attention in 2025, 2026 and beyond following the transmission of a very popular BBC programme in early 2025. The property sits between Calle Eras and Calle Saturia Pardo, stepping down the hill. There are entrances on three sides, with the main carriage entrance on Calle El Moral; the stone threshold still has the ruts carved by carriages and carts entering and exiting the property. For the apartments, the reception can be found tucked into a corner off Calle Eras, concealed by a large orange tree. ACCOMODATION Upper Ground Floor There is a reception area just inside the front door, and then passageways and stairs lead to other parts of the building. On this floor, there are three apartments, one of which has an upper floor bedroom. Apart from Apartment 1, with a bedroom on an upper floor, all the apartments have an open-plan living space/bedroom with kitchenette and separate bathroom. There is air-conditioning and heating in each room, so the apartments are suitable for year-round tourism. There is a pretty courtyard garden beside the reception area, and from the main landing a flight of stairs leads down to the lower ground floor. Lower Ground Floor It is on this floor that there are reminders of the buildings past. The main reception room is like a museum, with old storage jars set into the floor and antiques lining the walls. A huge timber door opens from a large hallway onto the main courtyard and swimming pool terrace. There is a separate WC and store room on this floor, and a short flight of stairs leads up to Apartment 4. Apartments 5 and 6 are accessible via the exterior stairs that lead from the main garden down to Calle Saturia Pardo below. Throughout the property there are additional storage areas for storing linen and other items pertinent to the successful running of a tourism accommodation business. Outside The main courtyard garden is laid out on two levels and the swimming pool is set into the upper terrace. From this spacious terrace there are 360 degree views - arguably some of the best views in the village - across to the Sierra Nevada in one direction and up to the church and Castle in the other direction. At present, the rental prices for each apartment range from 55 - 70 per night. Moclin is a very historic village, with a past extending back well over 23, 000 years. Its history is intertwined with that of Granada, the city that can be seen below the village; the Alhambra can be seen from Moclins 13th Century Moorish castle. The Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Fernando, stayed in Moclin for 6 years before they captured Granada from the Moors in 1492. The village hosts one of the most important classical religious festivals in Spain, the Festival of Cristo del Pao on 5th October, a day when an average of 15, 000 people descend on Moclin.
