White-washed houses cling to a hillside laced by steep staircases and topped with a ruined Venetian castle. Below, a promenade lined with tavernas and cafes hems in the fishing harbour. Its a slow-paced, friendly place where agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy. A long, sandy beach skirts a wide bay to the east of town. Sitia has a small airport withdaily flights to and from Athens and a few charter flights from Europe during the summer. The international airport of Heraklion is 2 hours by car. The port has ferry connections to Piraeus and other islands of the Cyclades and Dodecanese.
