The surrounding area consists of low moraine hills (known as motti), part of the Lagoni di Mercurago Natural Park where, in 1860, the first pile-dwelling settlement ever discovered in Italy was unearthed. Most of the municipal area is hilly, with elevations gradually descending from north to south (and from west to east in the town center) from 513 m at Motto Mirabello (near the Dagnente district) to 195 m at the lakeshore. The hills are mostly covered in forests, which occupy over half the land area in Arona.
