The village of Chiusdino is situated in a magnificent location between the Val di Merse and the Colline Metallifere, the Tuscan Ore Mountains, in the middle of the area known as Terre di Siena. Chiusdino, which was probably founded by the Lombards in the early Middle Ages, later came under the influence of the bishops of Volterra and then became part of the municipality of Siena (from the 13th century). The town has retained its medieval features, which are emphasized by the surrounding castle and village. Some sections of the wall ring are still preserved, within which there are also some residential buildings from the Middle Ages. Places of interest in Chiusdino In this small historic village, the church of San Martino, known as fuori le mura (outside the walls), the Prepositura di San Michele next to the birthplace of St. Galgano and the church of the Compagnia di San Galgano, where an interesting bas-relief depicts St. Galgano thrusting his sword into the rock, are of particular interest. The mythical Abbey of San Galgano and the hermitage of Montesiepi rise right on the territory of Chiusdino. The basilica, famous for its lack of a roof and one of Tuscany's artistic landmarks, is an impressive and unique example of a Romanesque-Gothic Cistercian church in Italy. The Montesiepi hermitage and the basilica are undoubtedly the most important sacred building complex in the Siena area. The hermitage stands on a hill densely covered with oak trees, exactly where the young knight Galgano di Guidotto retired to a hermit's life in December 1180, the year in which he plunged the famous sword into the rock to recreate the symbol of the cross. This can still be seen today in the small church of Montesiepi. In the municipality, it is also worth visiting the village of Frosini and its castle, where the Conti della Gherardesca resided; the small villages of Luriano and Castelletto and the castle of Montalcinello are also worth a visit. Don't miss a visit to the Val di Merse Nature Park, a 12-hectare oasis that is perfect for trekking excursions by bike or on horseback. An unmissable complex in this area is the Mulino delle Pile, the mill that is best known for having always been the logo of the Mulino Bianco company's products.
